This was
the last weekend before the gruelling Christmas period of 4 games in 10 days so
everyone was looking to give themselves the best chance of going on a good
festive run of form. Here’s a look at who did just that and who might now be
dreading the coming weeks.
Winners
QPR: Their first win of the season sees
QPR off the bottom of the table just in time for the Christmas slog. Harry
Redknapp seems to have breathed new life into The Rs and they are now unbeaten
in four matches under the manager. ‘Arry owes much of this win to…
Adel
Taarabt: One game
and two goals is a bit quick for talk of a rise to stardom for the Moroccan
maestro but he was the icing and the cake in QPR’s win yesterday. Perhaps he
has a manager who finally knows how to get the best out of him.
Aston
Villa: A shock win
at Anfield sees Paul Lambert’s men go from 17th to 14th in
one fell swoop, proving just how tight this Premier League season is once you
look past the top 2. A
much needed 3 points with Chelsea and Tottenham on the horizon.
Tottenham: Proving that they can win without
Gareth Bale, only just. But Swansea
had been unbeaten in 6 before yesterday’s encounter and Spurs have now
leap-frogged under-performing Everton into 4th place.

Rodgers has nothing to be happy about (Courtesy of Bernard C - Flickr) |
Brendan
Rodgers: If I Rodgers
I would be tearing my hair out. I don’t think much of this is his fault, he has
a disappointingly average squad at his disposal, most of which wasn’t his
doing. The fans must be going barmy too; they are probably the most frustrating
team to follow in the Premier League at the moment, and that’s no mean feat
given the form that Arsenal and Newcastle
are on. Something revolutionary needs to be done at Anfield because, while a
couple of poor draws and a defeat away at Tottenham were possibly acceptable,
this home defeat against a mediocre Aston Villa side is not.
Darren
Bent: First
dropped, then injured and now having to watch his rival for the Villa attacking
spot, Christian Benteke, score 3 goals in 2 games. It’s hard to remember the
last time things were going well for Darren Bent.
Fulham: Now with only 1 win in the last 9,
compared to 4 wins in their first 8 games, Martin Jol’s team have been slowly
slipping down the table since the end of October. Admittedly QPR are no longer
the whipping boys that they once were but if The Cottagers continue on their
current path the will soon be dragged into the relegation dogfight going on
just below.
Chelsea: Didn’t even have a Premier League fixture but
still find themselves in the “Losers” column. Failed to take advantage of the
potentially morale-boosting sideshow that is the Club World Cup and also so
title rivals Man United and Man
City record comfortable
wins. Benitez’s side are now 13 points off top, albeit with a game in hand, and
look far more likely to be fighting the race for 3rd than the race
for the title.
